Nap-Ersize: A gym class where you sleep for 45 minutes

Don’t fancy yourself much of a gym-bunny? Well you may need to give it a serious rethink after you hear about a new class offered by a UK-based gym, the David Lloyd Club.

The organizers call it “Nap-Ercise” and claim that the class will “reinvigorate the mind, improve moods, and even burn the odd calorie.” The club has targeted parents of young children who are likely getting less than the minimum sleep requirement of 7,5 hours per day. The class consists of 15 minutes of light stretching followed by a 45-minute nap on a plush double bed.

The health benefits of napping are well acknowledged and include:

• Improved mood
• Increased alertness
• Fewer mistakes and accidents
• Better logic and memory
• Decreased sleepiness
• Faster task completion

How to sleep at work… without getting caught

There are many ways of grabbing a power nap on the sly… there is the traditional falling-asleep-at-your-desk move, the wearing-sunglasses-because it-is-so-bright-in-this-conference-room move and the fake-toilet-break move.

However, recent research reveals that taking an hour-long nap in the afternoon improves memory and thinking – so if you can get your boss sold on the idea, we have identified a few products that will take your afternoon snooze to the next level. These provide warmth, darkness and neck support, allowing you to take your nap time under your desk, into your parked vehicle, onto a quiet garden bench or even behind that large sofa in the staff lounge if you have to!

Which of these great sleep products would you choose to make sure you get the power nap you need pronto?

How to powernap at work

How to power nap at work

Who wouldn’t want to get all of the benefits of a power nap? Just look at this list…
• Improved mood
• Increased alertness
• Fewer mistakes and accidents
• Better logic and memory
• Decreased sleepiness
• Faster task completion
However, to make the power nap part of your workday, you will need to do some experimenting to avoid the dreaded sleep inertia or grogginess that can accompany a poorly-timed power nap.
1. Duration
You will need to work out your ideal nap duration. A power nap is intended to be 10 – 30 minutes of light sleep that helps your brain to refuel. Do not exceed 30 minutes or you will have entered the realm of deep sleep and struggle to wake up and focus. See what works for you by trialing power naps of different intervals between 10 and 30 minutes duration.

2. Scheduling
You will also need to work out when to take your nap. If you are working and have a sleep debt from the night before, you should take your nap earlier in the day around 10am. If you have had a good night’s sleep, you should take your nap in the afternoon, some time between 2 and 4pm when the urge to sleep is the strongest. Power naps should not interfere with your bedtime, but assist with your daytime productivity.

3. Location
Finding the right location is also essential. Where are you likely to find uninterrupted light sleep? It may be in your car, under your desk or beneath a tree. Taking your nap in the same place, at the same time each day will help train your brain to fall asleep quickly and help you get the most out of your power nap.
